INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:

WEEU Staff are available to work with college interns in the fall and winter semesters as well as in the spring semester and over  their summer break.  The interns have an opportunity to learn skills in a variety of radio positions from news-writing to promotions, sales and production.  The intern is typically in his or her senior year of college.  WEEU will work with the intern to help them meet the requirements necessary to get credits for the internship for the college if it offers such a program.  The internship usually requires approximately 30 hours a week.  WEEU also offers ‘shadow’ opportunities to students who seek them for school projects or career programs.  These are typically one day experiences shadowing a professional at the radio station. During 2019 Greg Kobylt interned with us from August 2019 through December 2019. Greg took off an entire semester for the experience. He then returned to University of Alabama for his Junior year of college.

TRAINING PROGRAMS:

During the time period of this report, (52 weeks), WEEU continued working with students from various regional high schools, providing them with a hands-on opportunity to participate in all aspects of the actual live talk-radio broadcast of a weekly show for and about teens. Known as “RADIO VOICES” this weekly, one-hour talk-radio show involves students with every aspect of the show including pre-production, selection of topics, board operation, panelist duties, interaction with listeners/callers, and follow through.  The opportunity provides a realistic training opportunity, allowing students to consider whether or not a career in this field might be something they want to pursue beyond high school.  (80 students)

LITERACY AND THE COMMUNITY:

WEEU has developed a literacy program that interfaces with the curriculum and students at Muhlenberg Elementary School.  The students learn a new word each week.  The ‘Word of the Week’ is a Monday morning feature on the WEEU Morning Show w/ Mike Keller, WEEU’s morning drive radio show.  A student records the word, its’ definition and use in a sentence.  The segment airs at 8:20.  The student body listens and then incorporates that word into their reading program.  At the end of each quarter students write a story using all the words.  A Student is awarded a prize for best use of the words.  At the end of the year there is a school assembly celebrating the words, stories and students. This program airs from September through June. (40 weeks)

WEEU Radio Narrative Statement:

WEEU’s outreach initiatives demonstrate a firm commitment to interaction with the community in ways that include mentoring students, participating in job fairs, conducting broadcast learning seminars, offering internships and scholarships, and producing a weekly teen radio talk show for students from all school districts in the community.

WEEU is very pleased with the results of our weekly teen talk radio program, RADIO VOICES, as this effort has given the students actual hands-on experience with all aspects of producing and participating in a weekly radio talk show.  As an added bonus, the show is popular with teen and adult callers, and as such, it gives the students an opportunity to think on their feet as they field calls that generally center on a topic of the week.  There is generally a panel of three to four teens on the show each week.  Most participants are juniors and seniors in high school.

WEEU is very active in the local community and likes to help promote events that serve historical purposes for preservation and human interest as well as helping out charitable organizations, crime stopper groups, and any organization that is helping to make Berks County and beyond a better place to work, live and raise a family. Mike Faust does a three-hour live broadcast with Crime Alert Berks County to help get the word out about how the local residents can do their part to help law enforcement do their job better. On 8/1/2019 Mighty Mike Faust kicked off Crime Alert Berks County’s 21st year of serving this community. The live broadcast brought in close to $30,000 to help fight crime. Crime Alert Berks County has been the number 1 crime stoppers group in Pennsylvania in tip money paid out for the last 15 years.

WEEU CARES is a series of live broadcasts that were done in concert with local advertisers to help promote good will in the community that covered topics like heart health, children’s charities, animal rescue, cancer prevention & treatment, the food bank, the blood bank, Giving Tuesday (all Berks County charities), suicide prevention, drug and alcohol abuse. We also covered Veterans Day with local WWII veterans as our guests told their stories. We did several shows and a live broadcast to promote it.

WEEU also broadcast the Reading Radsport pro bike race on Saturday, August 3rd 2019. The seven-hour live broadcast brought people from all walks of life within the county and the city to watch and listen to coverage of this second annual bike race which included cyclists from all over the world. The proceeds benefited the 13th & Union Elementary School Playground which benefits inner-city children.

These types of efforts on the part of WEEU and its employees provide broad outreach and realistic opportunities to persons in the community who may be interested in a broadcasting career.

WEEU is an equal opportunity employer.  It is the policy of WEEU to provide equal employment opportunity to all qualified individuals without regard to their race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation or any other characteristic protected by law, in all personnel actions.
